My fellow Americans,

It's a long-standing tradition for the sitting president of the United States to leave a parting letter in the Oval Office for the American elected to take his or her place. It's a letter meant to share what we know, what we've learned, and what small wisdom may help our successor bear the great responsibility that comes with the highest office in our land, and the leadership of the free world.

But before I leave my note for our 45th president, I wanted to say one final thank you for the honor of serving as your 44th. Because all that I've learned in my time in office, I've learned from you. You made me a better President, and you made me a better man.

Throughout these eight years, you have been the source of goodness, resilience, and hope from which I've pulled strength. I've seen neighbors and communities take care of each other during the worst economic crisis of our lifetimes. I have mourned with grieving families searching for answers -- and found grace in a Charleston church.

I've taken heart from the hope of young graduates and our newest military officers. I've seen our scientists help a paralyzed man regain his sense of touch, and wounded warriors once given up for dead walk again. I've seen Americans whose lives have been saved because they finally have access to medical care, and families whose lives have been changed because their marriages are recognized as equal to our own. I've seen the youngest of children remind us through their actions and through their generosity of our obligations to care for refugees, or work for peace, and, above all, to look out for each other.

I've seen you, the American people, in all your decency, determination, good humor, and kindness. And in your daily acts of citizenship, I've seen our future unfolding.

All of us, regardless of party, should throw ourselves into that work -- the joyous work of citizenship. Not just when there's an election, not just when our own narrow interest is at stake, but over the full span of a lifetime.

I'll be right there with you every step of the way.

And when the arc of progress seems slow, remember: America is not the project of any one person. The single most powerful word in our democracy is the word 'We.' 'We the People.' 'We shall overcome.'

미국 대통령 당선자가 후임자를 데려오기 위해 미국 대통령 집무실에서 고별 편지를 남긴 것은 오래 된 대통령의 오랜 전통입니다. 우리가 알고있는 것을, 우리가 배운 것을 나누고, 우리의 후임자가 우리 땅에서 가장 높은 직책과 함께하는 큰 책임과 자유 세계의 지도력을  키울 수있는 작은 지혜를 나누기위한 편지입니다.

그러나 제 45 대 대통령에게 전할 메모를 남기기 전에, 마지막으로 저는 44 번째로 봉사하는 영광을 주신 것에 감사하다고 말하고 싶습니다. 내가 사무실에서 일하면서 배운 모든 것은 당신에게서 배웠기 때문입니다. 당신은 나를 더 나은 대통령으로 만들었고 더  멋진 사람으로 만들었습니다.

이 8 년 동안 당신은 나를 바른길과 넓은 아량으로 인도했고 내가 힘을 얻었던  희망의 근원이었습니다. 저는 우리의 생애 최악의 경제적 위기에서 이웃과 공동체가 서로 보살 피는 것을 보았습니다. 나는 슬픔에 잠긴 가족이 대답을 찾고 슬퍼하며 - 찰스턴 교회에서 은혜를 얻었습니다.

나는 젊은 졸업생들과 우리의 신임 군 장교들의 희망에서 마음을 얻었습니다. 저는 과학자들이 마비된 사람들이 다시 살아나는 것을 돕고, 두번 죽임받은 상처를 입은 전사들을 도운 적이 있습니다. 나는 마침내 의료 혜택을받을 수있는 삶을 살았던 미국인과 그들의 결혼 생활이 우리 자신과 동등한 것으로 인정 받기 때문에 삶이 바뀐 가정을 보았습니다. 나는 가장 어린 자녀들이 그들의 행동과 피난민들을 돌 보거나 평화를 위해, 그리고 무엇보다도 서로를 보살 피는 우리의 관대함을 상기시켜줍니다.

나는 당신의 품위, 결단력, 유머 감각, 그리고 친절 함으로 미국 시민 여러분을 보았습니다. 그리고 귀하의 시민권 행사에서 나는 우리의 미래가 펼쳐지는 것을 보았습니다.

당파를 불문하고 우리 모두는 그 일에 매진해야합니다. 선거가있을 때뿐만 아니라 우리 자신의 편파적인 이해관겨를 떠나서 일생의 전 기간 동안 나는 당신과 함께 모든 길을 걸을 것입니다.

그리고 개혁의 과정이 느릴 때, 기억하십시오 : 미국은 어떤 한 사람의 프로젝트가 아닙니다. 민주주의에서 가장 강력한 단어는 '우리'라는 단어입니다. '우리 국민.' '우리가 극복 할 것이다.'
